Your stays in the Schengen Area

Add each stay in the last 180 days. The day you enter and the day you leave both count.

    How it works

You may stay in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The 180 days are not a fixed half-year: for every day you are in the area, look at that day and the 179 days before it. If you were in the area on more than 90 of those days, you are overstaying.

The day you enter and the day you leave both count, even if you arrive late at night or leave early in the morning. Days in different Schengen countries add up: it is one area.

The rule applies to visa-free travellers and to holders of a Schengen short-stay visa (type C). A visa can be stricter: it is valid only between its dates, and the “Duration of stay” printed on it caps your days. Long-stay national visas (type D) and residence permits follow their own rules.

Since October 2025 the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) records the entries and exits of non-EU travellers electronically instead of passport stamps, and counts the days used automatically at the border.

    Worked examples

How many days do I have left?

    You stayed 1 March 2026 – 30 March 2026 and 1 May 2026 – 30 May 2026. On 15 June 2026 the counting window starts on 18 December 2025, so 60 days count and 30 days remain.

    Is my next trip allowed?

After the same two stays, you plan to enter on 1 July 2026 for 45 days. You can stay 30 days only, so you must leave by 30 July 2026. The earliest entry that allows 45 days is 29 July 2026.

    I used all 90 days

You stayed 1 January 2026 – 31 March 2026: 90 days. You cannot return until the January days leave the window: the earliest entry for a stay of 10 days is 30 June 2026.

    Questions

Do the entry and exit days count?
Yes. Both count as full days whatever the time of arrival or departure — the same method as the European Commission’s calculator.
Do the 90 days reset every 180 days?
No. The window rolls: on every day, the 180 days before it are counted. Days come back to you gradually, one by one, as old days leave the window.
    I have a one-year multiple-entry visa. Can I stay a whole year?
No. The visa’s validity is the period in which you may travel; the 90-days-in-180 rule still applies, and so does the “Duration of stay” printed on the visa.
Do days in the United Kingdom or Ireland count?
No. The United Kingdom and Ireland are outside the Schengen Area, so days there do not count. See the list of Schengen countries on this page.
    What happens if I overstay?
Overstaying can lead to a fine, removal or a ban on future entry, depending on the country, and the Entry/Exit System records it. Plan your trip to stay within the limit.
    Is this calculator official?
No. It is an independent tool that applies the rule the way the European Commission’s official calculator does. For borderline cases, confirm with the official calculator or the embassy of the country you are visiting.
